Local Events and Opportunities:

Empowering Women: Money, Health and Faith is a Mennonite Women USA resourcing event that will take place on August 12-13 at Peace Mennonite Church in Aurora, Colorado, just east of Denver. In previous years, this kind of event was called PREP (preparing, resourcing, encouraging, praising) and was held specifically for area-conference women leaders. This year, this event is being opened up to all women, because, let’s be honest – who among us doesn’t need to be empowered with regards to our understanding of money and our personal health? We will experience and enjoy networking, friend-making, worship, inspiration, nurture, eating, education and our favorite word: empowerment – that’s what you can expect on Aug. 12-13. Rhoda Blough, of Denver, and Teresa Boshart Yoder of Harrisonburg, VA, will present. As staff of Everence, they bring passion, experience and tools for us to understand our relationship with money and our personal health.  These professionals will provide handouts, books, journals and other resources. The Sing Me High Music Festival celebrates music and faith in the Shenandoah Valley. We anticipate that this festival will become an annual tradition for people of all ages and faiths. This year's one-day event will feature eight music groups with Shenandoah Valley roots and ties, old-fashioned hymn singing, Mennonite and Brethren artisans, children’s activities, A Bowl of Good, pork barbecue, barbecued chicken, coleslaw, and ice cream, and a campfire sing-a-long at the close of the event. This year the festival is August 27 from 2-10:30pm and is jointly hosted by the Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center and the Walking Roots Band. The festival will be a family-friendly, alcohol-free event. Please make yourselves at home! Bring a blanket, your favorite camp chairs, or a sofa on wheels. Limited folding chair seating will be available under the main tent. We'll take care of the music and the food, so all you need to do is come and enjoy! Visit www.singmehigh.com for more information and ticketing. Order your tickets before August 1st for a chance to win a $50 voucher for festival CDs and souvenirs. Be sure to check out the invitations to sponsors and volunteers, too. Since this is a new festival, we're looking for lots of help–consider signing up with your Sunday School class or small group for a fun afternoon of good work and good music!

There is no “ideal” host – some are young families, some are middle-aged and some are retired. Hosts develop their own unique relationships with IVEP participants. This is a wonderful opportunity for families with children who are learning Spanish. We hope that the IVEP participant will become part of the family. IVEP is a year-long work and cultural exchange opportunity for young, Christian adults. Every year 60 participants come from more than 25 countries around the world to volunteer in the U.S. or Canada, where they live with a local person or family.
